Dessert Social is a Sweet success

Praying for government and political leaders is one of the ministry goals of the Ottawa-based National House of Prayer, and they brought that message to the Hamilton area on March 6 with a dessert open house at Ancaster’s Redeemer University College.

National House of Prayer (NHOP) director Richard Long, who previously served as pastor of Millgrove United Church, said the dessert evening was “a great chance to reconnect with friends and supporters, and also to meet a lot of new friends who are interested in how prayer can change government.”

The evening at Redeemer was the first of a series of similar social events taking place across Canada.  The event attracted more than 150 guests; roughly twice as many as NHOP was initially expecting.

Stephen and Gail Whyte of Paramount Drive Alliance Church in Stoney Creek shared the positive impact of having led prayer teams that have visited the National House of Prayer.  Guests also heard about the experiences of Wendy Turpin, Jenn Bodnar and Lori Folkerson, who have each taken part in various aspects of the NHOP ministry.

Member of Parliament David Sweet spoke about how much politicians are in need of wisdom that is greater than their own given the complex issues and problems that Parliament and legislatures must deal with.

“If you have ever been in Question Period in the House of Commons, especially on a scrappy day where there is lots of stuff going back and forth across the floor, you have no idea what it means to be able to look up and see Rob and Fran Parker, or Terry and Richard Long, sitting there in the gallery everyday praying for you, and knowing that they represent a whole team of praying people from across the nation,” said the MP for Ancaster-Dundas-Flamborough-Westdale.

“Among the many other good works that millions of Christians across Canada do, the National House of Prayer is a shining expression of people of faith caring passionately about their country,” said Sweet.  “NHOP deserves support from the broader Christian community and they certainly have my deep gratitude.”
